Dubrovnik IV
Around town, Dubrovnik is pittoresque to be sure. Tourism is Croatia's #1 industry, and locals do whatever they can to encourage it's growth. They have, however, avoided becoming a medieval Disneyland. Restoration remained true to the city's original architecture: nestled amid modern gelatto stands and souvenir boutiques one can visit abbeys, churches, theatres, etc.

Pigeons. EVERYWHERE*. I. hate. pigeons.

A look at modern Dubrovnik. It consists mainly of condos and hotels. There isn't a lot of shopping, but activites abound: water sports, hiking, tours, and anything else you could possibly imagine. Tommy is a nat'l grocery chain we stopped at every night on our way back to Zaton. We were continually amazed by the amount we spent each trip: Croatia is so inexpensive!

An awkward translation. The older generations all speak german (Germans and Austrians comprise the largest percentage of tourists) in addition to their native tongue, whereas the younger generations tend to speak more english-- and very well at that!
*Actually, compared to most European cities, there really aren't that many. But one is too many in my book...
