The Republic of Ragusa was known--in its heyday for its navy. Sitting on the Adriatic, Ragusa's ships control local waters and made their presence known as far as the Americas. The above is the famous photo featured in all the guide books and tourism posters. I took it as we were leaving Dalmatia, heading to the airport. Unfortunately, it was a gray, rainy day.
